Product Overview

Afoxolaner Tablets are an oral medication specifically formulated for the control of external parasites in dogs, including fleas and ticks. Available only by prescription from a registered veterinary surgeon, this product provides an effective solution for managing parasitic infestations.

Composition

Each tablet contains:

• Afoxolaner: 25 mg

Mechanism of Action

Afoxolaner is a drug belonging to the Isoxazoline family. It binds to flea and tick nerve cell chloride channels, particularly those activated by the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which blocks pre- and post-synaptic transfer of chloride ions across cell membranes. This prolonged afoxolaner-induced hyperpolarization results in uncontrolled activity of the central nervous system and death of insects and acarines. The selective toxicity of afoxolaner between insects/acarines and mammals may be inferred by the differential sensitivity of the insects' & acarines' GABA receptors.

Indications

• Treatment of flea (Ctenocephalides felis and C. canis) infestation in dogs: Effective for at least 5-8 weeks.
• Treatment of tick (Dermacentor reticulatus, Ixodes ricinus, Ixodes hexagonus, Rhipicephalus sanguineus) infestation in dogs: Effective for at least 5-12 weeks. Fleas & ticks must attach to the host and commence feeding for the onset of effect, which begins within 8-24 hours for fleas and Dermacentor variabilis and Ixodes scapularis >90% are killed within 48 hours and for Amblyomma americanum >90% are killed within 72 hours.
• Treatment of demodicosis (Demodex canis):
• Treatment of sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes Canis):

Dosage

The recommended dose is 2.5 mg/kg bodyweight. It is highly recommended to check the weight of the animal and calculate the dosage properly before medication. The tablets can be divided if required. To prevent adverse reactions, it is better to divide oral dosage into at least 3 equal doses with a 6-hour interval between administrations.

Treatment Schedule

• The treatment is effective for at least 2 to 5 months. However, monthly administration is more appropriate throughout the flea or tick seasons, based on local epidemiological studies.
• Treatment of Demodex mange: Monthly administrations of the product until two negative skin scrapings are obtained one month apart. Severe cases may require prolonged monthly treatments.
• As demodex mange is a more complex disease, it is advisable to treat any underlying disease together.
• Treatment of sarcoptic mange: Monthly administration of the product for two consecutive months.

Contraindications

Do not use in cases of hypersensitivity to the constituents of the tablet.

Adverse Reactions

Very rarely, mild gastrointestinal effects such as vomiting, diarrhoea, pruritus, lethargy, anorexia, & neurological signs such as convulsions, ataxia & muscle tremors have been reported. But most reported adverse reactions were self-limiting and of short duration. Any side effects, even those not already listed in this package leaflet or medicine surgeon or us, please inform your veterinary surgeon.

Precautions

The person administering the Afoxolaner tablets to the dogs should wash hands after handling the tablets to prevent children from getting access to Afoxolaner tablets, remove only one chewable tablet at a time from the blister pack, return the remaining chewable tablets to the carton with the remaining chewable tablets in its carton.

Withdrawal Period

Not applicable.

Warning

Special warnings for each target species: Parasites need to start feeding on the host to become exposed to Afoxolaner. So the risk of transmission of parasite-borne diseases cannot be excluded. Special precautions for use in animals: Treatment of puppies less than 8 weeks of age or dogs less than 2 kg bodyweight should be assessed by the veterinary surgeon.

Pregnancy and Lactation

The safety of the Afoxolaner tablets has not been established during pregnancy & lactation or in breeding dogs using during pregnancy and lactation should be assessed by the veterinary surgeon.
